Dear Parents/ Carers,
World Book Day takes place on Thursday 1st March 2018 and we would like to invite you to join us in helping your child to make the most of this special occasion. The staff are very busy planning lots of activities for the week that will help to encourage your children to continue to have a love of books and reading.
During the week there will be many exciting activities and events around the school and within the classroom. Please get involved where you can and prepare your children for the events listed below and overleaf.
World Book Day Tokens
World Book Day celebrates the joy and value of books and reading, especially for children. To help them get started on their reading journey, every child will receive a £1 book token. To use the book token, you must take it to one of your local booksellers and swap it for one of the TEN (exclusive, new and completely free) World Book Day books. If you’d prefer, you can use your book token to get £1 off any full price book instead.
23rd February 2018- Weekend Homework- Design a book cover competition.
The challenge has been set.
We are inviting ALL children to take part in the Ashmole Book Cover competition. We will provide children in both Reception and Year 1 with a blurb for a new story. We would like you to read your child the blurb (or they can read the story to you) and then design a book cover. We would also like your child to use what has been read to come up with a title for the book. The best book cover from each year group will be selected by a panel of judges and the winners will be awarded a special prize.
Have fun designing!!
Monday 26th February
Pre loved book donations – Reception and Year 1
We are working on continuing to expand our ever growing book collections in our Class Reading Gardens. To help us further, we are asking for your support by donating any pre loved books that you are happy to pass on to the school for other children to enjoy reading. Please hand any books to Mrs Andrews in the office.
Tuesday 27th February - Pop up book swap
On Tuesday morning we will have tables set up in the playground. We would like the children to bring in a book they no longer read (not a new book) and swap it with a book that another child has donated. We hope that this will give all of the children the opportunity to leave school on Tuesday with a new book to take home and keep.
Wednesday 28th February
Sharing our favourite books – Reception
We would like to encourage all pupils to bring in their favourite book on Wednesday 28th and it will remain at school until the end of the week. All children will be given the opportunity throughout the week to present the book to their friends and explain why it is their favourite.
Thursday 1st March –Reading buddies
The children will be given a partner from another year group on Thursday, who will then become their reading buddy. Throughout the day the children will get to spend some time reading to each other, discussing pictures from stories and talking to their buddy about their favourite books. We hope to continue this at different points throughout the year.
Friday 2nd March – Book Character Day
We are inviting all pupils to come to school dressed as their favourite book character on Friday 2rd March. The costume can be as simple or elaborate as they like and an expert panel of judges will choose the girl and boy with the best costume from each class to receive a book related prize.
We hope the children will enjoy an exciting and inspiring week full of book related activities including; Grandparents storytime, storytelling – stories from different cultures, DEAR time (Drop everything and read) involving all adults in the school reading to pupils, exploring a variety of different genres, a new song about books in preparation for our special World Book Day assembly.
Thank you in advance for your support in making World Book Day such a Success!
