Key Stage 1 Autumn News

We have enjoyed a wonderful first term in Year 1 with staff and students having established routines, demonstrating high standards and expectations both inside and outside the classroom.  The Year 1 children began the year with a smooth transition from the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum to the National curriculum subjects for Key Stage 1. We have learnt many new concepts in Maths and both the children’s reading and writing skills are developing wonderfully. Our pupils are also enjoying being Scientists and carrying out a variety of scientific investigations through experimentation, as well as showing great enthusiasm in foundation subjects such as Geography, History, R.E, Computing, Music, P.E. and Spanish.

Year 2 have had a fantastic start so far this year. On the back of a successful Summer term with amazing KS1 results, we flew into a new term ready to learn, investigate, explore and have fun.  The unit of work we have focussed on this term is Bright Lights Big City, which focussed on London past and present.

We explored our local area and learned to use the iPads to become photographers.  We have looked closely at the Great Fire of London and the changes it brought to the city, we wrote diaries and burned the houses we designed and made. We invited a local firefighter in and the children were amazed at the speed in which the fire spread.

This half term we have changed our focus and are looking at the work of two famous and inspirational women from our past - Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole and have visited St. Thomas’s hospital to see how their legacy has affected London’s hospitals.
